Ohio University Theatre Department Brings 'She Kills Monsters' Back to Athens

Ohio University’s School of Theater rounds out its third production of the season this week with “She Kills Monsters,” a Dungeon and Dragons-esque production with Athens as its main setting.

The show follows Agnes Evans as she recovers from the death of her younger sister, Tilly. The two were never close, but while packing up her sister’s room, Anges discovers Tilly’s Dungeons and Dragons module. Agnes begins to play her sister’s game, and discovers things about Tilly that she never imagined.

“It addresses the culture of those who are sometimes pushed to the edge of society,” Director Brian Evans says.

Nguyen, a 2002 alumnus of OU’s MFA playwriting program, may have simply described the setting as “an average town and close-knit community,” but students and locals alike will immediately recognize aspects of Athens, including mentions of Athens High School and scenes that take place in the now-closed Wizard’s Guild game shop.

Evans said the hardest part of “She Kills Monsters” is how physically demanding it is for the actors. Stage combat, swordplay, theatrical effects and props along with the central narrative lead to a challenging and complex show for everyone involved.

“Designers and technicians have crafted some incredible costumes and props that help tell the story of the magical world of dungeons and dragons,” Evans said. “There are limbs of monsters that fall off, there are trap doors that monsters appear out of and battles with the central party.”

By contrast, Evans said the best part of directing the production was students’ enthusiasm.

“The students involved love the story, the style, the humor and the poignant moments,” Evans said. “They are having a great time, and for me, that’s the most rewarding thing as a teacher.”

“She Kills Monsters” will be presented at the Forum Theater in the RTV Building on February 25-29 at 8 p.m. Tickets are free for OU students with student ID, $10 for adults and $7 for all other college students, seniors, alumni, veterans and first responders.
